Since I returned to work in mid-February, I’ve had to go and pick up the boys from nursery (well, mainly Baby E) on a handful of occasions. And that has meant trying to negotiate the mystery that is Försäkringskassan (Swedish social security office) and claiming the days back. I was worried that how to VAB was not that easy – not just those who have moved to Sweden are wholly confused by the required forms for Försäkringskassan, as most Swedes struggle with it as well – but now Försäkringskassan has come to the rescue of parents with an app for those who need to VAB – to claim time off work for sick children.
The first day that you have to take off work, you just open the app and log in with your personnummer and Bank ID (available from your bank).
Next, select yourself under Välj vårdnadshavare.
The next option is to choose whether you will complete your application via the app, or whether you would like a paper application sent to you.
Then, the first day that you return to work, you have until the end of the day to fill out the last part of your application: ansök om ersättning. In the app, follow the same initial procedure as before, logging in and then choosing Vård av barn in the first menu. But in the next menu, choose Ansök om ersättning (instead of Anmäl vård av barn).
You then choose the first day that you took time off work in the calendar and click on that. On the next menu, choose how long you were off work that day – full day or part of the day (half, quarter, three-quarters etc). Do this for each day that you were not working.
The next thing to do is fill in information about why you are claiming – ie your child was sick and what they were sick with.
You also need to answer some questions about whether you live with the other parent of your child, whether they worked while you were home with your child, whether you are employed. Then check that your contact and bank details are correct. Finally, confirm that all the details are correct and press the big green Signera och skicka button at the bottom. You’ll then need to fill in your Bank ID code again.
And then Bob’s your uncle, it’s all done.
Thank you, Försäkringskassan. Your system might still be incomprehensible, but this app makes life that little bit easier.
